Yea, finally got to talking about my trip. It was really nice. I met this guy who gave me really new thoughts about my project… no need for specifics; you will only find it boring. I read somewhere that all PhD students should find 10 words that would summarise their project for anyone who asks; I haven’t found my 10 words.

After Amsterdam I took a three-hour train ride to Maastricht where I met some old classmates from Uppsala. One of them is doing a PhD at the United Nations University in Maastricht, and the other works in Brussels. I would have posted the pictures of the people I met there, but u know say oyinbo people fit give you wahala if you post their picture without their consent…

Was at Madam Tussauds in Amsterdam. Beautiful figures. Will try and post some. At least, dat one na public domain pictures

Yesterday was my birthday, and if you read what I posted last year you would know that I am not a major fan of birthday celebrations. I am in Maastricht after a brief meeting in Amsterdam. I had some fun in Amsterdam and I will write more about it when I get back to Halle.

My mother called me yesterday evening to tell me that they had been forced to stay at home all day because of riots in the town and the whole state. I was told that people were rioting over the results of the gubernatorial elections. It was alleged that it was rigged in favour of the incumbent. They said that the safest thing to do in such cases is to stay at home…. What can one say about that? The last time it happened was in 1983 when Chief Omoboriowo was announced as the winner of the gubernatorial elections. The violence that resulted from that is still discussed in the state. I really hope that we do not have a repeat of such violence. I was not around then, but I remember that my grandmother told me about ‘Ogun Omoboriowo’, literally ‘Omoboriowo’s war’.

I was in Berlin yesterday to see the family I stayed with the other time. Actually, one of the reasons I went was to leave Halle and let off some steam. I mean, no matter how smart one is, no matter how ambitious one is, one still finds that there are times that one simply go dry, and a change of routine sometimes help in that. I went to Berlin to change my routine. I have been under pressure lately: I have to work on my German, I am taking courses at the University, one of them in German, and since I need French for my research I have been brushing up my French, albeit in a class taught in German. Coupled with all these, I have been trying to work on my research. So when I say that I am super tired I hope you understand what I mean. But during my stay in Berlin, I went through a lot of blogs, and I found out how interesting bloggers Nigerians are. The blogs I read through ranged from the utmost trivialities to the most serious reflections about being. Some are simply about everyday boring experiences, but that draw interests from readers who can easily identify with the issues the bloggers face; some are about private issues that are not easily brought to the public, except through adopted names etc.; some are about politics in Nigeria, and all over the world. While some are outrightly stupid, most are really interesting. What I have decided to do as I find them is to add them under the links tab in my blog.

Till later.

I have been following the April 14th elections on NVS and I have not been surprised by anything. I did not think that we would have a free and fair elections; all I hoped for was that the election would hold anyway, and that people would start getting used to the idea that there are actually terms, and that after a term they either seek re-election or leave office for another person. If we are able to do that, and successfully, then we would be on the way to conducting future free and fair elections.
