A friend introduced me to Asa’s music sometime ago - actually, I listened to her Bi ban’ ke and instantly liked the sound of her voice. I stumbled on her Myspace page today, and from there went to her website. I tried out samples of her songs and I really liked it. I tried to buy the album on iTunes, but it was only available in the French store. Someone should tell iTunes to make their stores available globally.
Asa (pronounced asha) is a Nigerian lady who was born in Paris but grew up in Lagos. She later returned to Paris, where, according to her bio, she played with Les Nubians, Manu Dibango, Doctor L, and Tony Allen. Her first album was released on 16 October 2007. Sometimes, her lyrics are unpretentiously didactic, like in Fire on the Mountain and Jailer, but then, even those who don’t like ‘preachy’ songs will find her melody enchanting. Here is her Myspace page, and here is her website. Let’s know what you think!

Hi there - thanks for this post - it is included in the 6th edition :

Such great music!
much greetings, anna
Asha is simply great. I saw the video of the FOTM song and even though didactic, I found it great in its simplicity. Think of Bob Marley’s early (and late) medley hits.
Warmth.

ASA
I was introduced to her singles “Eye Adaba” and “Iba” on radio and pinned for an album to own.
About a yr later, I was taking an evening stroll one evening whe I heard her voice on a parked car’s stereo and had to go talk to the driver. He confirmed that “yes, Asa has a CD out”, I was ecstatic.
I made a bee-line to my Music Vendor who (thankfully)had the album in stock.
When I heard it, first thot that came to my head was “This girl is brave”.
Her music style is simply “WAOW”, I love the ‘width’of her voice, the jazz feel is great and the mix with her local language is simply outta this world.
She reminded me so much of the irish artist “Enya”. Now that I have Asa, I wonder who Enya is.
Big ups Girl, lets know when and where your next concert is. And a video collection?
By the way, I simply LOOOVE “Beautiful”
I really think this lady is brave

Hello, thanks for the links!
I’ve been looking for information on Asa for quite a while and this helped me quite a bit…
I stumbled accross Asa’s music on the radio qith the now quite known “Fire on the mountain” and wanted to get her album… Which by the way is extremelly pleasant, with relaxing, easy flowing music, soft, melodic but still strong voice.
I feel like her melodies really invite one’s mind to wander out the window and makes you want to leave your body and take of…
Anyway, great, really great album from Asa!
just to say that i appreciate your kind of music and i must say you are a harworking nigerian female musician. most female artistes can’t even score a song nonetheless play an instrument. this album is really a hit form song 1 to the very last - it’s like taking a bottle of soft which you enjoy so much an you are not looking forward to see the last drop. i hope to see you play live one of these days in lagos. i particularly enjoyed the one dedicated to a mother. thanks for making us proud.
