Ilorin National Museum on a Saturday

While in Ilorin last weekend I asked my friends about the tourist attractions in the city. They told me that there was one museum, which was not opened on a Satruday. Above is a picture of a part of the museum – The Moremi Ajasoro National Museum Hair-Do Centre.

And oh yea, the other important part – perhaps the most important, actually – is the bar in the same compound with the museum. As I learnt, there are normally drummers and singers to sing the praise of the patrons. Last Saturday was not any different.

What more does one want from a museum? At one side there is a centre for hair-do, at another there is an avenue for praise singing… ok, maybe it would have been nice to really see the holdings of the museum. But don’t forget that I said that the museum was close on Saturdays.

    Hey,bru, i think the presence of the bar and the traditional hairdressers’hut in the museum has brought to public notice that there is a museum in that place.Otherwise a happy ‘BARrister’ like me would not have discovered the museum.It is like this: i accompanied a lady to the local saloon hut inside the museum premises where ,she claimed, they make the most beautiful cornrows- then i happily discovered there was a bar in the premises where they also make the most delicious peppered ‘ponmo’and where young lovers can while away time while their women get cornrowed. The singers and drummers are modern day griots and at least they still remember your town’s cognomen(in this age of collective amnesia).It is a good thing.The museum that would have become unusable is capturing the sunset imagination of a happy people. I mean i once saw a posse of lab-coat clad medical students sitting in a table away discussing anatomy and dissection over ponmo and soda.I also routinely see the creme de la creme of the university commmunity enjoying chat and drinks at the museum.It works like that

    Hey Peter, I love the way you serendipitously discovered the bar :) Ok, the point of the post was not that it was bad that there was a bar there (actually, you are well aware of my relationship with bars) the point was that I would have loved to see the holdings of the museum. Maybe next time I’ll come during the week when it is open.

    And about the modern day griots… yea, I love them, really. That was why I even posted their pictures. I guess my concern, really – and I bet you share the same concern – is our general attitude towards museums.

    Ilorin museum opened 4 visitors everday including public holidays.Both hair-do & peppered soup joint ar means of preserved ar heritages,pls noted.
