The Wire

10 Oct

Some months ago Jeremy recommended The Wire to me, describing it as anthropological. I just finished watching the last episode of the last season, and being an anthropologist myself, I have to agree that this looks pretty much ethnographic. HBO is known for their good shows. Hell, the last piece of TV that I really enjoyed was from them: Six Feet Under. And I just learnt that they released a TV movie not too long ago on the recount of the 2000 presidential elections in Florida. The movie is called Recount and the good Doctor Mark Kermode describes it as really good. By the way, he is the best movie critic.

I guess all I’m saying is that if you want to see one good piece of good TV please let it be The Wire. This has cushioned my landing in Germany; work begins in earnest on Monday. And thanks for this, Jeremy.

Got to agree. I found myself watching the entire first series over the course of three days…! Excellent, excellent stuff. And on so many levels. There is the dialogue, which rings true (granted I am not from Baltimore), the attention to detail, its sweeping, humane and apparently accurate depiction of the society it depicts and the thrilling crime caper that holds the piece together. A must see.

I have to confess that The Wire has never been a show that I wanted to watch. I have however heard incredible things about it. Glad to know you have enjoyed watching episodes.

Whatever tv I watch seems to fall into one of 2 categories – sci fi/fantasy, as in Lost, Battlestar Galactia, Heroes, etc, and Crime, as in CSi, CSI Miami, the entire Law and order franchise and Damages. MAybe i should broaden my tv horizon, eh? Nah, I watch enough tv already.
