Detained Nigerian Blogger

I am sort of a late-comer to the news about the arrest of Mr. Jonathan Elendu of Elendu Reports. This is a sad development indeed, especially as it comes when we are still trying to reconcile our image of a benevolent Yardy with the incedents that surrounded the closure of Channels TV. This latest development shows that there might be an emerging pattern. We should not let this slide. We should not only demand that Mr Elendu be released, we should also demand an explanation of what transpired from the federal government. Otherwise, this leads to the dangerous conclusion that Nigeria is losing the one thing that has often been reported in the international press about Nigeria – the relative freedom of the press.

I have to agree with you on this one. This regression is very disturbing but not shocking. I was shocked in August when his party began to accuse opposition parties of “treason”. That’s when I got nervous. Now, I’m just going through the motions.

Anyway, I join you in wanting Elendu released and thank you for putting this up. I have added your post to the growing list of posts from fellow Nigerian bloggers.

I have to agree with you on this one. This regression is very disturbing but not shocking. I was shocked in August when his party began to accuse opposition parties of “treason”. That’s when I got nervous. Now, I’m just going through the motions.

The Trans African Council for Communication Education (TRACCE) has joined the list of those asking for Elendu’s release. But I think we need the press back home to get the government to feel the heat. Fortunately, Punch has joined PM News in (potentially) priming the issue. Elendu’s arrest is a throwback. The SSS is still anti-democratic. This is why I suggested that our institutions need a thorough overhaul to reflect our new political status.
